Clare High School Healthy Lifestyles

Healthy Lifestyles at Clare High School brings together Health & Physical Education (HPE) and Home Economics, two complementary learning areas that equip students with practical skills and knowledge for lifelong wellbeing, from physical literacy and mental health to food, nutrition, and independent living.

In Year 7 to Year 10, both learning areas are compulsory and provide a broad foundation. HPE students engage in a variety of physical activities, games, and fitness programs, alongside health topics such as mental wellness, drug education, and sexual health. Home Economics students undertake Food and Textiles in Year 7 and Year 8, building foundational skills in food and nutrition, safe kitchen practices, and basic textile construction.

From Year 9, Home Economics becomes an elective, with two semester-length options available each year, giving students the chance to further develop skills in food design, textile construction, and independent living. Year 10 HPE similarly broadens into more specialised elective options, including Coaching and Leadership, Outdoor Education, and dedicated AFL and Recreational Health courses, allowing students to begin tailoring their study toward particular interests or pathways.

At Stage 1 (Year 11) and Stage 2 (Year 12), both learning areas offer dedicated SACE subjects that build toward further study or careers in sport, health, and related fields. Home Economics splits into three subjects: Food & Hospitality, Material Products: Textiles, and Child Studies. HPE offers advanced study in Physical Education and Health & Wellbeing, with a focus on performance analysis, health literacy, and environmental sustainability through outdoor education.

Completion of the relevant Year 10 or Stage 1 subject is recommended, though not compulsory, before progressing to the next level in either learning area.
