Agriculture and Community Engagement at Clare High School

Agriculture

Expansive Agriculture Facility

Our agriculture facility spans an impressive 3 hectares and includes a vineyard, vegetable garden, fruit trees, and facilities to grow and care for sheep, pigs, chickens, steers, and goats.

Vineyard and Wine Production

The vineyard covers 1 hectare and was planted in 2001, consisting of 1000 Riesling and 400 Shiraz vines. This was planted as a disease-free source block for the Clare Valley Vine Improvement Society.

Student Involvement and Cross-Curriculum Ventures

Students prune the vines and pick the grapes at harvest time, with the grapes being used to make a Rosé. In a true cross-curriculum venture, Art students design the labels and Business and Enterprise students design the business plan for the sale of the wine. Each dozen comes with a mixture of different labels.

Community Support and Collaboration

We are lucky to have the support of many local businesses and experts, with both Knappstein and Paulett wineries producing our Rosé in recent years, and a range of individuals from the community supporting the students with pruning and picking the grapes, as well as the provision of bins, trucks, and other equipment needed to complete this venture.

Show Team and Competitions

The Show Team competes by showing goats, steers, and merinos at the Royal Adelaide Show each year. The team is open to all students up to Year 11, where students up to Year 10 can be involved in showing goats, and Year 10 and 11 students can be involved in showing steers. Additionally, all Year 12 Agriculture students show merinos as part of their course.
