Content: Essential Mathematics offers students the opportunity to extend their mathematical skills in ways that apply to practical problem-solving in everyday and workplace contexts. Students apply their mathematics to diverse settings, including everyday calculations, financial management, business applications, measurement and geometry, and statistics in social contexts. In Essential Mathematics there is an emphasis on developing students’ computational skills and expanding their ability to apply their mathematical skills in flexible and resourceful ways.
This subject is intended for students planning to pursue a career in a range of trades or vocations.
Students who successfully complete a full year of Stage 1 Essential Mathematics will have the foundation for further study in Stage 2 Essential Mathematics.
Students who complete 10 credits of this subject with a C grade or better will meet the numeracy requirement of the SACE.
Assessment: Students are assessed using the SACE Performance Standards. Students demonstrate evidence of their learning through the following assessment types:
- Assessment Type 1: Skills and Applications Tasks (at least two per semester)
- Assessment Type 2: Folio (at least one per semester)
Students provide evidence of their learning through four assessments.
